U.S. Treasury
In 2006, Albert Michaels conducted a comprehensive historic paint analysis of the United States Department of Treasury Building (built in the 1860s), with the hopes of uncovering the building's original frescoed walls and ceiling decoration. Through research, microscopic analysis of samples taken from the building and chemical exposures made on site, we were able to uncover trompe l'oeil decoration that pre-dates the Civil War, hidden, in some instances, under 50 layers of paint. From these findings, we were able to preserve some of the examples for future reference as windows into the past.
